Digital Design & Marketing for SBMTD (Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District)

Working in marketing at the SBMTD gave me the opportunity to practice end-to-end customer and user experience design.

I was a marketing/planning intern at the SBMTD. I designed maps, marketing collateral and learned a lot about city planning processes.

In addition to learning the bus routes and systems, attending planning meetings including the sign committee. I proud to be part of a local agency serving residents and visitors.

With meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, I created digital designs for every bus map, route and time table.

The designs held up and are essentially the foundation for what is in place and it looks like they’ll be in use for years to come. What I learned while working there inspired me to embrace the interconnectedness of ‘business and society’, as Peter Drucker referred to it, as this was essential to creating a functioning society. My experiences working at the larger, local organizations such as the MTD and Cottage Health System serving residents, visitors, students and others in Santa Barbara, were more meaningful than the work I’ve done at large, well-known companies.

From ethnographic studies to hands on, iterative design, I learned from every minute – and pixel – of my experience.

Designing for people who need to get from point A to point B gave me insight into the needs of lots of different types of folks.

It inspired me to continue working in areas where I could merge creativity with a human-centered approach into a professional life.
